Ra Ra Riot and Tokyo Police Club are Friends of P

Friday, August 10, 2007. It was a cold and overcast night but an entertaining one none the less. Entertaining because I got to see Ra Ra Riot and Tokyo Police Club plus openers Ford and Fitzroy at Bowery Ballroom. I call it the night of the EP's (None of these artists have release a full length album). Doors opened at 8 PM so I decided to not show up till 9 hoping the openers were finishing up their set. However, I arrived to an empty ballroom with memebers of Ra Ra Riot just hanging out. I stood around for a few minutes but felt awkward cause I was there all alone. At that point I decided a nice drink may help. Ordered a vodka with cranberry (not that this is important but just felt like mentioning it) and as I waited for the bartender to prepare my drink, I was informed the opening act had not even performed yet.

I was a bit disappointed to learn this considering it was already 9PM. But I'm actually glad I made in time to see Ford and Fitzroy. They actually were pleasant. With interesting melodic beats and catchy lyrics, it was hard not to enjoy them. The singer looked and sang like as if he was the love child of Jack White of The White Stripes and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance. The rest of the band looked indie and apparently the crowd and I agreed that they were quite on the thin side. In fact someone actually made that apparent to the whole band and crowd by shouting out loud "You guys are really thin." It was quite amusing. Overall, I enjoyed Ford and Fitzroy's set and would recommend fellow Tokyo Police Club and Ra Ra Riot fans to check them out.

-A side note: I happened to run into a few people from my past. Luckily they didn't recognize me. The world can be small at the weirdest times.

Back to the show! Next up was Ra Ra Riot. I was so psyched to see them since it has been almost 4 months since I last saw them and this time they were performing without beloved John Pike (recently deceased drummer). Not only did the band have a new drummer but a few even had some new looks. Cello player, Alex, is a blonde now rather than a brunette and Milo, bass player, has longer hair. Even though there were minor changes, their performance was the same, absolutely fucking awesome. Like usual, they had their intense crazy energy on stage plus more. They even played some new catchy tracks. I can't wait till they finally release that full-length album. I was also surprised to see how many people actually came out to see them. It was refreshing to see they have an adequate fan base in NYC. This is a band you want to succeed. Who wouldn't enjoy songs where you can rock out to many crazy strings (guitar, bass, cello, and violin) like in "A Manner to Act" and sing along to catchy lyrics like on "Can You Tell." Please go see Ra Ra Riot and their crazy on-stage performance at a venue near you!

Next was Tokyo Police Club but before I mention their performance, I thought I should mention some amusing occurrences with Ra Ra Riot. Now the band tends to hang out in the crowd quite often and I happened to be right near the backstage area (what else is new) and was often being brushed up against their guitarist as he had conversations with friends and fans. I decided to let him be because I didn't have much to say to him. However, I felt kind of sorry for him because at one point 2 guys came up to him to harass him for information on Alex (Cello Player). They wanted to know if he was dating her or if she was dating anyone and then even went further to ask for her number. Granted, Alex is beautiful but that was so inappropriate and unnecessary. For those of you who are also wondering if Alex is available. It was left unclear but get in line behind the 40 people in front of you.

Anyway, now on to Tokyo Police Club. Not that impressed. It wasn't as energy driven as I was hoping it to be. But they weren't horrible either. They were just mediocre. I was able to dance to "Nature of the Experiment" but other than that I just swayed back and forth. They played a lot of songs I wasn't familiar with and the riffs just weren't being expressed the same way they were on the album. They were enjoyable at times nonetheless. They were lively and passionate and that was enough motivation for me to rock out. Tokyo Police Club, just a tip, please be as energetic on stage as you are on your album. It's your rocking out fast beats that we want!

It was all coming to an end but a great one nonetheless. The night ended with an Encore of both Tokyo Police Club and Ra Ra Riot performing The Rentals "Friends of P." It's as if they knew I was in the crowd and they were dedicating the song to me. Thanks guys. I appreciate it! It was a great end to an evening.

Overall impressions:

Ford & Fitzroy - 4 out of 5 stars - * * * *
Ra Ra Riot - 5 out of 5 stars - * * * * *
Tokyo Police Club - 3/12 out of 5 stars - * * * */2

MIA

Yes so I have been somewhat MIA and unresponsive to many texts, emails, and comments. I don't mean to be. I just have been so busy trying to get situated in my new apartment. It wasn't and easy move and well my room still needs fixing. I spend my days working my ass off and my nights fixing up my home. It's coming along nonetheless. I promise the next few weeks I will be more available to catch up with those I have neglected over the past few weeks.

So much to do... So little time...

Satisfy Your Peanut Butter Addictions Anywhere

Someone must have been thinking of me when they created this:

Now only if Trader Joe's Peanut Butter is available on the go.

I just thought other Peanut Butter addicts should also know of this wonderful creation. Although, I must say, it's not enough Peanut Butter. I need to eat 2 packs to fulfill my craving. From my understanding, however, the To Go pack is actually meant to be a dip. Hence, for why the pack is so small and I need 2 to satisfy me. Regardless, it's a great invention.

Spider-Man 3

I had the chance to see Spider-Man 3 on Thursday night for the late night premiere showing. I thought the show only had a minor flaw, the dialogue. Obviously it was written for an audience that is under the age of 13 but it bothers me when conversations don't seem life like. Fortunately, it was only at certain points when the dialogue was weak.

Regardless, I felt the movie was a fun adventure with great special effects. I enjoyed Topher Grace as Eddie Brock but the character I liked the most was Tobey Macguire as Venom. I think he did a great job being an asshole and he looked sexy doing it too. I guess it is true, girls just seem to have an attraction to jerks. Of course, Tobey Maguire is still adorable as the geeky and sweet Peter Parker but he's just more desirable as Venom. I guess it's also the candid resemblance to Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes. Just look at the picture below:

Okay, I'll stop drooling. Just go watch Spider-Man 3!

Welcome to my Place of Residence

Welcome to my blog.
The impersonal blog of my shareable thoughts and feelings.

As of right now, I am spending the weekend indoors trying to figure out my near future. To move or not to move? I never realized how difficult it is to find an apartment in the city. There are so many apartments available yet none of them suit my preferences. I'm also spending the weekend all alone. No family members or friends around. I like the silence. I like the freedom. I like the lack of checking in and questions. But I miss them too. It's always been so hard for me to make decisions because of my ambivalent form of thinking. It's great to see the pros and cons of all choices but it's a pain when trying to choose. In due time, this will be figured out.

BTW, my blog title comes from my inability to see. I use to walk around without my glasses and the world just looked better blurry. Hence, Blurry for Perfection.
